AWS contributes a large-transaction binary log optimization to MySQL
AWS Database Blog

TL;DR - BOLT, long always-on in Aurora, stops a multi-gigabyte transaction from blocking other commits while it is copied into the binlog, and it speeds up crash recovery. It is planned for a future MySQL innovation release.

Vinicius Grippa: "MySQL Is Not Dead, But It Needs Physiotherapy"
OurSQL Foundation Blog

TL;DR - Ten months after he publicly asked whether MySQL was dead, the Readyset engineer and Oracle ACE Director talks through MySQL's strengths, where Postgres is ahead on AI, and who is filling the gaps.

An analytical replica for MySQL, on Oracle's HeatWave benchmark
Daniel Guzman-Burgos, dbtrail Blog

TL;DR - On Oracle's own HeatWave test, DBTrail, an open source binlog-to-Parquet/DuckDB replica, ran 12x more analytic queries per minute than Percona Server alone and cut the OLTP p99 from 42 to 31 ms.

A New KMIP Library in C++, and the Only Free One
Oleksiy Lukin, Percona Community Blog

TL;DR - Percona open sourced kmipclient, a native C++ KMIP client for talking to key management systems. It already backs Percona Server for MySQL's KMIP keyring component in 8.4.10+, 9.7.1+ and 26.10.

Amazon Aurora MySQL 3.14 (compatible with MySQL 8.0.46) is generally available
AWS What's New

TL;DR - Aurora MySQL 3.14 adds post-quantum TLS key exchange. Separately, Aurora MySQL 8.4.10 adds GTID tags and up to 50,000 connections per instance.

The Galera Crossroads, Part 2: Swap the Binaries, Keep the Cluster
Marco Tusa, TusaCentral

TL;DR - A step-by-step, node-by-node migration from Codership MySQL/Galera 8.4 to Percona XtraDB Cluster 8.4.11, with zero downtime and no new hardware. It covers strict mode, cluster-traffic encryption and SST settings.

How VillageSQL does open source
Adam Levin, VillageSQL

TL;DR - How the GPLv2 VillageSQL Server project is run: a CLA that grants a license rather than ownership, GitHub Issues as the source of truth, a public project board with weekly triage, and the same review process for every contributor.

MyVector Featured in the MySQL Ecosystem Project Spotlight of the Week
Alkin Tezuysal, AskDba

TL;DR - The MySQL community team's LinkedIn spotlight features MyVector, an open source plugin that adds vector storage and HNSW similarity search to MySQL through SQL.

Multi-Node Unused Index Verification
Arunjith Aravindan, Percona Blog

TL;DR - sys.schema_unused_indexes sees only one server, and its counters reset on restart. A new check_unused_indexes script reports an index only when every node in the topology agrees it is unused.

Database News

Introducing MariaDB Enterprise Platform 2027: one foundation for the agentic enterprise
Tina Yang, MariaDB

TL;DR - The platform adds agent memory, a semantic cache, AI retrieval, BYOC deployment and Raft-based multi-region clustering. A companion benchmark post claims Enterprise Server 12.3 LTS reaches about 4x the HammerDB TPROC-C throughput of 10.6.

Patroni, Ubuntu 24.04, and two unplanned PostgreSQL failovers
Franck Pachot

TL;DR - An unattended zlib update made Ubuntu's needrestart restart Patroni in the middle of a load, causing a failover, and then a second one when the new primary was patched. Includes the journal-based root-cause analysis.

The hidden latency inside your database
Simeon Griggs, PlanetScale Blog

TL;DR - Network-attached storage puts a network hop inside every database I/O. This piece explains when durable local NVMe pays off and when network storage is fine.

MariaDB Performance Claim : Technically Correct, but Misleading
Jean-François Gagné

TL;DR - A response to last week's "MariaDB 11.8 became about 3× faster" post. The fix recovers a regression from 10.5, so against 10.4 the gain is about 9%, and the author argues for fairer vendor claims across the ecosystem.

Lakebase Postgres is now generally available on Google Cloud
Cassie Murray, Databricks Blog

TL;DR - Databricks' serverless Postgres, with autoscaling, scale to zero, instant branching and PITR on storage shared with the lakehouse, is now GA on Google Cloud.

Still on MariaDB 10.6? Why your next upgrade is a security decision
Anna Widenius, MariaDB Foundation Blog

TL;DR - MariaDB Community Server 10.6 reached end of life on 6 July 2026, and 10.6.28 was its final release. Security fixes now land only in 10.11, 11.4, 11.8 and 12.3.

Introducing DBArena: open, reproducible benchmarks for hosted Postgres
Aditya Maruvada and Daniel Mitterdorfer, Supabase Blog

TL;DR - This Supabase-sponsored site benchmarks Supabase (heap and OrioleDB), RDS and Cloud SQL Postgres at matched vCPU and I/O, normalized for price. The methodology and tooling are open source.
