Where to Find VillageSQL Next Week

We're on the road next week with three Bay Area events across the MySQL community. If you're at any of them, come say hi —  in-person chats are so much more fun than messaging over GitHub.

Oracle MySQL Community Contributors Summit - May 26, 2026

We'll be at Oracle's MySQL Community Contributors Summit, where we submitted a feature request proposing a VillageSQL-compatible extension framework for upstream MySQL. We can't contribute the existing framework due to constraints around Oracle's Contributor Agreement. FWIW, we filed a bug ticket to address that too. Having a compatible extension framework in upstream makes sense because the more places an extension can run, the more value extension authors get out of writing an extension.

It's an invite-only event, but we'll report out what we learn.

South Bay Systems - May 26, 2026

Steve Schirripa (VillageSQL's CTO) is giving a talk titled The Extensibility Tax: Decisions, Principles, and Lessons from a Year of Teaching MySQL New Tricks. A year into building the VillageSQL Extension Framework, we've made a lot of decisions and learned a lot. This talk is a summary of what we've learned and walks through the design decisions that survived and the ones that didn't. Whether you're building database extensions, working with large legacy codebases, or just curious about what's hiding inside MySQL, you'll leave with practical lessons about making architectural decisions when the codebase is fighting you at every turn.

Percona Live - May 27-29, 2026

Percona Live is back in the Bay Area. It's one of the preeminent events for open source database software and VillageSQL is a sponsor this year! If you haven't bought your ticket yet, feel free to use this 25% off discount code: PERCONALIVEVIL2625

We have two talks at Percona Live this year:

Thursday, May 28 Keynote 8:45-9:15: Driving Innovation in MySQL with Extensions - come hear Dominic Preuss and Tomas Ulin speak about VillageSQL's core hypothesis of how an extension framework is the key to accelerating innovation within the MySQL ecosystem.

Thursday, May 28 12:30-1:00: Design Considerations for a Simple Extension Framework For MySQL - Dan Bentley will be exploring the design journey of VillageSQL and discussing the architectural challenges we faced and the approaches we took.

If you're at the conference, find us between sessions or visit us at the VillageSQL booth. We'll have stickers and other swag.
